TELC Exam Guide: levels, format, and telc Pflege for nurses

TELC covers the same CEFR levels as Goethe and is equally accepted for visas and citizenship — but it has one specialized version, telc Pflege, that becomes essential rather than optional if you're pursuing nursing recognition in Germany.

TELC levels — A1 through C1 Hochschule

TELC (The European Language Certificates) offers exams across the standard CEFR range, plus a couple of specialized versions worth knowing about:

  • A1–B2 — general German certificates, accepted for visas, the Chancenkarte, and citizenship, just like the equivalent Goethe levels.
  • telc Deutsch C1 Hochschule — a C1 exam specifically aimed at university admission, an alternative to TestDaF or DSH for some programs.
  • telc Pflege B1/B2 — the specialized nursing/care-sector exam. See below — this is the one that's often a hard requirement, not a choice.

Exam format

Like most CEFR-based exams, TELC tests reading, listening, writing, and speaking. Reading, listening, and writing are typically combined into one written exam block; speaking is a separate oral exam, often conducted with a partner or in a small group at lower levels, moving toward an individual presentation format at higher levels.

telc Pflege — the exam nurses actually need

If you're pursuing nursing recognition (Anerkennung) in Germany, most states specifically ask for telc Pflege B1 or B2 — not the general TELC certificate, and not Goethe. telc Pflege is built around care-sector vocabulary and real workplace situations: patient communication, handover reports (Übergabe), documentation, and medical terminology, on top of general CEFR-level German.

Requirements vary slightly by German state, so confirm the exact level and exam accepted with the recognition authority (Anerkennungsstelle) for your target state before committing to a prep track.

Registering for the exam in India

Unlike Goethe-Institut's own centres, TELC exams are administered through a network of authorized language institutes and exam centres — availability, dates, and fees vary by city and level. Check telc.net for the current exam centre finder and registration process.

FAQ

Common questions

They're different providers, but cover the same CEFR levels and are equally accepted for visas, the Chancenkarte, and citizenship. Neither is "better" for general purposes — pick whichever has a convenient test centre and date. Where TELC becomes essential rather than interchangeable is telc Pflege, its specialized nursing-sector exam.

telc Pflege B1/B2 is a specialized version of the TELC exam built around medical and care-sector vocabulary and situations — patient communication, handover reports, medical documentation. Most German states specifically require telc Pflege B1 or B2 (not the general TELC certificate) for nursing recognition (Anerkennung). Always confirm the exact requirement with the recognition authority (Anerkennungsstelle) for your target state, since it can vary.

TELC covers A1 through C1, including a specialized "telc Deutsch C1 Hochschule" version aimed at university admission. The general levels (A1–B2) are accepted for visas, the Chancenkarte, and citizenship, same as Goethe.

TELC exams test the same four skills as most CEFR-based exams — reading, listening, writing, and speaking — with a written exam block (reading, listening, writing) and a separate oral exam, often conducted with a partner or small group at lower levels.

TELC exams are offered through authorized language institutes and exam centres across India rather than a single official TELC-run centre — availability and schedule vary by city and level. Check telc.net's exam centre finder for current options near you.
