German Modal Verbs: müssen, dürfen, sollen

Learn German modal verbs and how to form German modal verb sentences. Modal verbs are essential for A1.2 German grammar and are used constantly in conversation. The same German word order structure applies as können and wollen. Modal verb goes in position 2, main verb at the end in the infinitive.

müssen (must, have to), dürfen (may, allowed), sollen (should, be told to).

Common mistakes

"Du darfst nicht gehen" means forbidden. For "you don't have to," say "Du musst nicht gehen." They're different. And "Er muss gehen," not "er musst."
