How the Goethe A1 Exam Works
The Goethe-Zertifikat A1 (Start Deutsch 1) tests four skills. Here's what each part covers and how to prepare for it using our free resources.
Reading (Lesen)
You read short notices, messages, and forms. The trick is to find one specific fact quickly. Start with our A1 vocabulary flashcards to build your base.
A1 vocabulary →Listening (Hören)
Short announcements and everyday conversations. Train your ear using the audio in the flashcards and by repeating sentences out loud.
Listen and repeat →Writing (Schreiben)
A short form and a short message. Practice the sentence patterns from our grammar lessons: sein, question formation, verb in position 2.
A1 grammar →Speaking (Sprechen)
Introduce yourself, ask and answer simple questions. This is the part you can't practice alone, so use our live classes or the Sprachcafé to get speaking time.
Sprachcafé →Ready to Take a Practice Test?
Use the official Goethe A1 sample test (Modelltest) from the Goethe-Institut website. It's free and comes with answer keys, so you can do a full timed run and see how you do. Once you identify weak areas, come back here and use our short exercises with answers to fix them. Then take our free level test again to see where you've improved.
FAQ
Questions About the Goethe A1 Exam?
The official Goethe-Institut publishes free A1 sample tests (Modelltest) with answer keys on their website. These are the closest thing to the real exam. We have short exercises here where you can practice each grammar topic and get instant answers and explanations. Try those first, then use the official Modelltest when you feel ready.
The Goethe-Zertifikat A1 (Start Deutsch 1) has four parts: reading, listening, writing, and speaking. The written parts take roughly an hour total, and the speaking part is a short conversation. Check the Goethe-Institut website for current timing and scoring. Their free sample tests show you the exact layout of each part.
Read short notices, messages, and forms, and practice finding one specific fact in each. Learn A1 vocabulary (numbers, times, places, family, shopping) and question words like wer, was, wo, wann, wie. Our vocabulary flashcards and grammar lessons cover exactly what you need. The official A1 Modelltest PDF includes a full reading section you can try under time.
We don't offer coursebook or training PDFs because those are copyrighted books. A quick search for "prufungstraining a1 pdf free download" mostly turns up unauthorized copies. The Goethe-Institut's own sample tests are free and legal, and all our A1 resources on this page cost nothing.
The Goethe-Institut doesn't publish real questions from past sittings, so there's no official PDF of past questions. But their official A1 sample test (Modelltest) follows the same structure and difficulty as the real exam. Use it alongside our topic-by-topic exercises here to address any weak areas it shows.
The Goethe-Institut offers a free A1 sample test (Modelltest) on their website that you can download with audio and an answer key. It's the most reliable practice material available because it's based on the real exam and works as a full practice test with answers. We don't host copies, so go straight to the official source.
Yes, absolutely. Speaking is the part most learners struggle to practice alone. Our A1 live classes include speaking practice from the start, and our Goethe exam prep course adds timed mock tests and exam techniques to help you feel confident on test day.
