German Articles as Pronouns: Welcher and Dieser
Learn how to use German articles as pronouns and German demonstrative pronouns. When you use the article instead of the noun, only the masculine changes in accusative.
Welcher/welches/welche asks "which?" Dieser/dieses/diese means "this one." Both follow the same German article endings.
| Nominative | Accusative | |
|---|---|---|
| masculine | Welcher Tisch? Dieser. | Welchen Tisch? Diesen. |
| neuter | Welches Buch? Dieses. | Welches Buch? Dieses. |
| feminine | Welche Lampe? Diese. | Welche Lampe? Diese. |
| plural | Welche Schuhe? Diese. | Welche Schuhe? Diese. |
Welchen Tee möchtest du? Diesen.·Welches Kleid gefällt dir? Dieses hier.·Der Film ist gut. Den sehe ich heute.
Common mistakes
When it's the object, use the accusative: welchen Tee, not welcher Tee.
Memory trick
Welch- and dies- take the same endings as German articles.
