A1 Grammar · Unit 6 · Topic 11 of 29

Accusative Case

When a noun is the object (the thing you have, want, buy, or eat), the masculine article changes from der to den. Feminine, neuter, and plural stay the same.

To find the object, ask "Wen oder was?" (Whom or what?)

Only the masculine changes: der → den, ein → einen, kein → keinen.

Common mistakes

"Ich möchte ein Kaffee." Wrong. Kaffee is masculine, so einen Kaffee. And "Das ist einen Kaffee." Wrong. After sein, stay in the nominative: Das ist ein Kaffee.

Memory trick

Only the men get a new hat with an -n: der → den, ein → einen. Ladies (die) and neutral things (das) stay the same.

Practice

Choose the right form.

  1. Ich habe (ein / einen) Bruder.
  2. Wir brauchen (der / den) Tisch.
  3. Ich möchte (eine / einen) Cola.
