German Comparison: gut, gern, viel (Comparative and Superlative)

Learn German comparatives and superlatives. Master how to form German comparison of adjectives. These three words are irregular in the German comparative and superlative forms. Learn them as a set for A1.2 German grammar.

Regular German adjectives add -er and am -sten: schnell → schneller → am schnellsten.

Ram spielt gut, Mohan spielt besser, Hari spielt am besten.·Ich trinke gern Tee, aber lieber Kaffee. Am liebsten trinke ich Lassi.·Geeta isst mehr als ich.

Common mistakes

Don't say "mehr gut." Use besser. And use gern/lieber with a verb: "Ich trinke lieber Tee," not "Ich mag lieber Tee." Don't forget "als" (than).
