Grammar

The grammar you'll actually use

We don't teach grammar as a subject on its own — every point below is introduced inside a real unit, at the point you need it to say something specific.

Articles: der, die, das

Unit 4

Every German noun has a gender — masculine (der), feminine (die), or neuter (das) — and there's no reliable shortcut for guessing it. We teach articles together with each new noun from day one, so you learn the correct gender as a habit, not a rule to memorise separately.

der Tisch (the table) · die Lampe (the lamp) · das Buch (the book)

Possessive articles

Unit 3

Words like "my," "your," and "his" change form depending on the gender of the noun they describe — mein Vater (my father) but meine Mutter (my mother).

mein, dein, sein, ihr, unser, euer, ihr/Ihr

Present tense conjugation & word order

Unit 5

German verbs change their ending depending on who's doing the action, and the verb almost always sits in the second position of a sentence — even when the sentence doesn't start with the subject.

Ich komme aus Indien. → Aus Indien komme ich.

Separable verbs

Unit 9

Some German verbs split in two — a prefix jumps to the end of the sentence while the main verb stays in second position. It looks strange at first and becomes automatic with practice.

aufstehen → Ich stehe um sieben Uhr auf. (I get up at seven.)

Modal verbs: können & müssen

Unit 10

Modal verbs like "can" and "must" push the main verb to the very end of the sentence — one of the first real German sentence-structure shifts you'll internalise.

Ich muss heute arbeiten. (I have to work today.)

Introduction to the past tense (Perfekt)

Unit 13

By the end of A1 you'll recognise and start using the spoken past tense — built with haben or sein plus a past participle — enough to talk about what you did yesterday or last weekend.

Ich habe Deutsch gelernt. (I learned German.)
