German Pronoun Cases: Nominative, Dative, Accusative
Master German pronoun cases and German personal pronouns. Pronouns change depending on their job in the sentence. Learn German dative pronouns and accusative pronouns. Nominative is who does it. Accusative is whom/what is affected. Dative is to/for whom, and after some verbs like helfen, gefallen, gehören. Understanding German pronoun cases is essential for A1.2.
German personal pronouns in all three cases:
| Nominative | Dative | Accusative |
|---|---|---|
| ich | mir | mich |
| du | dir | dich |
| er | ihm | ihn |
| es | ihm | es |
| sie (she) | ihr | sie |
| wir | uns | uns |
| ihr | euch | euch |
| sie (they) | ihnen | sie |
| Sie | Ihnen | Sie |
Krishna hilft mir.·Ich sehe dich.·Wir geben ihr ein Geschenk.·Hari kennt uns.·Das Buch gehört ihm.
Common mistakes
"Ich helfe dich." Wrong. Helfen takes the dative: dir. And don't mix up ihn (accusative, masculine) with ihm (dative).
Memory trick
Only three sets: mir/dir/ihm (dative), mich/dich/ihn (accusative). Notice uns and euch are the same in both.
Practice
Fill in the blank.
- Ram hilft ___ (ich).
- Ich liebe ___ (du).
- Wir schenken ___ (she) ein Buch.
- Das gehört ___ (he).
