German Imperative: Commands and Instructions
Learn how to form German imperative sentences and give commands. The German imperative is used for instructions and requests. Understanding imperative forms is essential for daily German communication.
du imperative form: Take the infinitive stem with no pronoun and no ending. Kommen → Komm! Vowel-change verbs keep the change: sprechen → Sprich!, lesen → Lies!, nehmen → Nimm!
ihr imperative form: Use the regular ihr form without the pronoun. Kommt! Hört zu!
Sie imperative form: Put the verb first, then Sie. Kommen Sie! Warten Sie bitte!
Sein is irregular: Sei! Seid! Seien Sie!
For separable verbs, the prefix goes to the end. Steh auf! Hört zu!
