Verb Conjugation (Present Tense)

About 3 minutes · tables, common mistakes and practice with answers

In short

German verbs change their ending depending on who's doing the action (ich, du, er/sie/es, wir, ihr, sie/Sie). Some common verbs like sprechen also change their stem vowel for du and er/sie/es.

हिंदी में समझें

verb की ending व्यक्ति के हिसाब से बदलती है: ich -e, du -st, er/sie/es -t, wir/sie/Sie -en, ihr -t।

Take any infinitive, remove -en to get the stem, and add the endings: -e, -st, -t, -en, -t, -en.

The wir and sie/Sie forms look exactly like the infinitive. If the stem ends in -t or -d (arbeiten, finden), add an extra -e before the -st and -t endings: du arbeitest, er arbeitet.

Some common verbs change their stem vowel, but only for du and er/es/sie. Sprechen becomes du sprichst, er spricht (e → i). Lesen becomes du liest, er liest (e → ie). Learn these one by one as you meet them.

lernenreisenfinden
ichlernereisefinde
dulernstreistfindest
er/es/sielerntreistfindet
wirlernenreisenfinden
ihrlerntreistfindet
sie/Sielernenreisenfinden

Same pattern: wohnen, kommen, machen, spielen. Verbs with an s sound (reisen, heißen) skip the extra s: du reist.

Vowel change verbs:

sprechenlesenfahren
ichsprechelesefahre
dusprichstliestfährst
er/es/siesprichtliestfährt
wirsprechenlesenfahren
ihrsprechtlestfahrt
sie/Siesprechenlesenfahren

Same pattern: helfen, sehen, laufen.

Common Mistakes in Verb Conjugation (Present Tense)

Don't say "du sprechst." It's du sprichst (vowel change). And remember: ich lerne, er lernt, ihr lernt. The ich and er forms have no ending.

Memory trick

The vowel-change verbs only change for du and er/es/sie. Ich, wir, ihr, sie/Sie stay normal.

Practice

Conjugate for each person.

  1. ich (wohnen), du (lernen), er (kommen), wir (heißen).
  2. du (lesen), er (sprechen).
