Question Words and Pronouns: worauf? / darauf

In short
For things, ask with wo(r)- + preposition and answer with da(r)- + preposition.
Worauf freust du dich? · Auf den Urlaub. Ich freue mich sehr darauf.
When a verb has a fixed preposition, you can't just ask was? or answer es. For things, German joins wo(r)- or da(r)- to the preposition: worauf? – darauf.
How it works
- Question about a thing: wo + preposition: wofür, womit, woran. Add -r- before a vowel: worauf, worüber.
- Answer about a thing: da + preposition: dafür, damit, daran, darauf, darüber.
- For people, use the preposition + pronoun: Auf wen wartest du? – Auf Ravi. Ich warte auf ihn.
Examples
- Worauf freust du dich? – Auf den Urlaub. Ich freue mich sehr darauf. (What are you looking forward to? – The holiday. I'm really looking forward to it.)
- Wofür interessierst du dich? – Für Fotografie. (What are you interested in? – Photography.)
- Hast du an den Termin gedacht? – Ja, ich habe daran gedacht. (Did you remember the appointment? – Yes, I remembered it.)
- Auf wen wartest du? – Auf meine Schwester. (Who are you waiting for? – My sister.)

Many verbs come with a fixed preposition, so learn them as a pair: warten auf, sich freuen auf, sich interessieren für. For things, ask with wo(r)- and answer with da(r)-. For people, keep the preposition and use wen, wem or a pronoun.

Common mistakes
Using es with a preposition: ✗ Ich freue mich auf es. ✓ Ich freue mich darauf. And da- for people: ✗ Ich warte darauf. (about Ravi) ✓ Ich warte auf ihn.
