Explained with pictures

A2 Grammar Explained Simply, in English and Hindi

These are the A2 topics students ask about most. Each picture shows the rule at a glance, with a short explanation in English and in simple Hindi underneath.

हर तस्वीर के नीचे आसान हिंदी में समझाया गया है, ताकि नियम पहली बार में ही साफ़ हो जाए।

Where the verb goes after weil, dass, wenn and deshalb

Verb position after deshalb and trotzdem compared with weil, dass, wenn and ob

Swipe the picture sideways to see all of it →

Both groups join two ideas, but they treat the verb differently. After weil, dass, wenn and ob the conjugated verb moves to the end of its clause. After deshalb and trotzdem it stays in position 2, straight after the connecting word.

हिंदी में समझें

दोनों तरह के शब्द दो बातों को जोड़ते हैं, पर verb की जगह अलग होती है। weil, dass, wenn और ob के बाद verb उस हिस्से के बिल्कुल आख़िर में जाता है। deshalb और trotzdem के बाद verb तुरंत दूसरे नंबर पर आता है।

Perfekt: where ge- goes

How the Perfekt is formed for four groups of German verbs

Swipe the picture sideways to see all of it →

Most verbs take ge- at the front. Separable verbs put it between the prefix and the verb. Verbs that start with be-, er- or ver- and verbs that end in -ieren don't take ge- at all. Use sein instead of haben when the verb is about moving from one place to another or changing state.

हिंदी में समझें

ज़्यादातर verbs में ge- आगे लगता है (gemacht)। Separable verbs में ge- बीच में आता है (angerufen)। be-, er-, ver- वाले और -ieren वाले verbs में ge- नहीं लगता (besucht, studiert)। जहाँ एक जगह से दूसरी जगह जाना हो या कुछ बदल जाए, वहाँ haben की जगह sein लगता है।

Wechselpräpositionen: Wo? or Wohin?

Two-way prepositions: Wo? takes the dative, Wohin? takes the accusative

Swipe the picture sideways to see all of it →

Nine prepositions can take either case. Ask yourself one question: is the thing already in that place, or is it moving there? If it's already there, use the Dativ (auf dem Tisch). If it's moving there, use the Akkusativ (auf den Tisch).

हिंदी में समझें

ये नौ prepositions दोनों case ले सकते हैं। ख़ुद से एक सवाल पूछिए: चीज़ पहले से वहाँ है, या वहाँ ले जाई जा रही है? पहले से है तो Dativ (auf dem Tisch)। वहाँ रखी जा रही है तो Akkusativ (auf den Tisch)।

stellen, legen, hängen and their partners

German position verbs stellen and stehen, legen and liegen, hängen

Swipe the picture sideways to see all of it →

These verbs come in pairs. The action verbs stellen, legen and hängen answer Wohin? and take the Akkusativ. The state verbs stehen, liegen and hängen answer Wo? and take the Dativ. Things that stand upright stehen, things that lie flat liegen.

हिंदी में समझें

ये verbs जोड़ों में आते हैं। stellen, legen, hängen का मतलब है कुछ रखना या टाँगना (Wohin? + Akkusativ)। stehen, liegen, hängen बताते हैं कि चीज़ कहाँ रखी है (Wo? + Dativ)। खड़ी चीज़ें, जैसे बोतल, stehen। लेटी हुई चीज़ें, जैसे किताब, liegen।

Dativ and Akkusativ in one sentence

Word order with a dative and an accusative object in German

Swipe the picture sideways to see all of it →

With verbs like geben, schenken and zeigen, the person who receives is in the Dativ and the thing is in the Akkusativ. With two nouns, the Dativ comes first. A pronoun comes before a noun, and when both are pronouns the Akkusativ one goes first.

हिंदी में समझें

geben, schenken, zeigen जैसे verbs में जिसे चीज़ मिलती है वह Dativ में होता है, और चीज़ Akkusativ में। दोनों noun हों तो पहले Dativ। Pronoun हमेशा noun से पहले आता है, और दोनों pronoun हों तो Akkusativ वाला (ihn, es) पहले।

Reflexive verbs

German reflexive pronouns mich, dich, sich, uns, euch

Swipe the picture sideways to see all of it →

When you do something to yourself, German adds a reflexive pronoun. Only ich, du, wir and ihr have their own form (mich, dich, uns, euch). Everyone else uses sich.

हिंदी में समझें

जब काम ख़ुद पर होता है, तो German में एक reflexive pronoun जुड़ता है। सिर्फ़ ich, du, wir और ihr के अलग रूप हैं (mich, dich, uns, euch)। बाक़ी सबके लिए sich।

Verbs with prepositions

Questions and answers with German prepositional verbs: worauf and darauf

Swipe the picture sideways to see all of it →

Many verbs come with a fixed preposition, so learn them as a pair: warten auf, sich freuen auf, sich interessieren für. For things, ask with wo(r)- and answer with da(r)-. For people, keep the preposition and use wen, wem or a pronoun.

हिंदी में समझें

कई verbs के साथ एक तय preposition आता है, इसलिए इन्हें जोड़े में याद करें: warten auf, sich freuen auf। चीज़ के लिए सवाल wo(r)- से (Worauf?) और जवाब da(r)- से (Darauf)। इंसान के लिए preposition वही रहता है: Auf wen? Auf ihn।

Konjunktiv II for wishes, advice and suggestions

Konjunktiv II uses: wishes, advice, suggestions and polite requests

Swipe the picture sideways to see all of it →

You don't need the full theory at A2. A handful of forms do most of the work: hätte and wäre for wishes, sollte for advice, könnte for suggestions, and würde or könnte for polite requests.

हिंदी में समझें

A2 में पूरी theory की ज़रूरत नहीं है। कुछ ही रूप ज़्यादातर काम कर देते हैं: इच्छा के लिए hätte और wäre, सलाह के लिए sollte, सुझाव के लिए könnte, और विनम्र अनुरोध के लिए würde या könnte।

Adjective endings in three tables

German adjective ending tables after der, after ein and without an article

Swipe the picture sideways to see all of it →

The ending depends on what comes before the adjective. After der, die and das the article already shows the gender, so the ending is mostly -e or -en. After ein the adjective has to show the gender itself in three places (-er, -es, -es). With no article at all, the adjective takes the ending that der or dem would have had.

हिंदी में समझें

Ending इस पर निर्भर करती है कि adjective से पहले क्या है। der, die, das के बाद article पहले ही gender बता देता है, इसलिए ending ज़्यादातर -e या -en होती है। ein के बाद तीन जगह adjective को ख़ुद gender दिखाना पड़ता है (-er, -es, -es)। Article न हो तो adjective वही ending लेता है जो der या dem की होती।

Present passive

How to turn an active German sentence into the present passive

Swipe the picture sideways to see all of it →

Use the passive when the person doing the action isn't important. The object of the active sentence becomes the subject, werden goes in position 2 and the participle goes to the end. You'll see it all the time on signs, forms and instructions.

हिंदी में समझें

Passive तब इस्तेमाल होता है जब काम करने वाला ज़रूरी नहीं होता। Active वाक्य का object, passive में subject बन जाता है। werden दूसरे नंबर पर आता है और Partizip II आख़िर में। Signs, forms और instructions में यह बहुत दिखता है।

Prepositions for giving directions

German prepositions for giving directions shown on a small street map

Swipe the picture sideways to see all of it →

These words describe the route itself. durch, über and um … herum take the Akkusativ. entlang comes after its noun (die Straße entlang). an … vorbei and gegenüber take the Dativ.

हिंदी में समझें

ये शब्द रास्ता बताते हैं। durch (के बीच से), über (के पार) और um … herum (के चारों ओर) के बाद Akkusativ। entlang (के किनारे-किनारे) noun के बाद आता है: die Straße entlang। an … vorbei (के पास से गुज़रते हुए) और gegenüber (के सामने) के बाद Dativ।

an, auf or in with holiday places

Using an, auf and in with holiday places in German

Swipe the picture sideways to see all of it →

Picture where you are. At the edge of water it's an, on an island or out in the countryside it's auf, and in the mountains or inside an area it's in. Use the Dativ for Wo? and the Akkusativ for Wohin?. Cities and most countries take in and nach.

हिंदी में समझें

सोचिए आप कहाँ हैं। पानी के किनारे (Meer, See) an, द्वीप पर या देहात में auf, पहाड़ों में या किसी इलाक़े के अंदर in। Wo? में Dativ, Wohin? में Akkusativ। शहरों और ज़्यादातर देशों के लिए in (Wo?) और nach (Wohin?)।

Indirect questions

Turning direct German questions into polite indirect questions

Swipe the picture sideways to see all of it →

Starting with Können Sie mir sagen or Wissen Sie makes a question polite. The question word stays, and the verb moves to the end. For yes/no questions, add ob.

हिंदी में समझें

Können Sie mir sagen … या Wissen Sie … से शुरू करने पर सवाल विनम्र हो जाता है। सवाल वाला शब्द (wo, wann) वहीं रहता है और verb आख़िर में चला जाता है। हाँ/ना वाले सवालों में ob (कि क्या) लगाते हैं।

lassen

The German verb lassen: doing something yourself compared with having it done

Swipe the picture sideways to see all of it →

lassen means you get someone else to do the job, like a haircut or a bike repair. lassen is the conjugated verb in position 2, and the main verb goes to the end in its infinitive form.

हिंदी में समझें

lassen का मतलब है कोई काम किसी और से करवाना, जैसे बाल कटवाना या साइकिल ठीक करवाना। lassen दूसरे नंबर पर आता है और असली verb अपने मूल रूप (infinitive) में आख़िर में।

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions About German A2 Grammar

German A2 grammar is the set of structures you learn after A1. It adds the past tense (Perfekt and the Präteritum of modal verbs), the dative case, Wechselpräpositionen, subordinate clauses with weil, dass, wenn and ob, adjective endings, the present passive, lassen and Konjunktiv II.

For most learners it is adjective endings, followed by Wechselpräpositionen. Both depend on the case, so they take practice rather than one explanation. We spread them over several units and come back to them in the review unit.

The Goethe-Zertifikat A2 does not test grammar in a separate section, but you need it to write the two short messages in Schreiben and to speak in full sentences in Sprechen. The 46 topics on this page cover what the exam expects.

Yes. Every topic in the reference table has a one-line Hindi explanation, and the illustrated section explains the hardest topics in both English and Hindi.

Yes, if the present tense, the accusative or the verb-in-position-2 rule still feel shaky. A2 builds directly on them. The free A1 grammar lessons on this site cover all of them with tables and practice.

In our intensive course, 8 weeks: units 1 to 7 in A2.1 and units 8 to 14 in A2.2. A semi-intensive pace that covers the same units over a longer period is also possible.
