About 3 minutes · examples, common mistakes, Hindi help and practice with answers

In short

Different: comparative + als. The same: (genau)so + wie.

Mein Zimmer ist kleiner als deins. · Er ist genauso alt wie ich.

Use als when two things are different (comparative), and wie when they are the same.

How it works

Examples

  • Mein Zimmer ist kleiner als deins. (My room is smaller than yours.)
  • Er ist genauso alt wie ich. (He's just as old as me.)
  • Berlin ist größer als München. (Berlin is bigger than Munich.)
(German isn't as hard as I thought.)

Common mistakes

Using wie after a comparative: ✗ größer wie ich ✓ größer als ich (you'll hear it in speech, but it's wrong in exams).
