Adjective Endings after ein, kein, mein

About 3 minutes · examples, common mistakes, Hindi help and practice with answers

In short

After ein, kein and mein the adjective ending shows the gender the article doesn't.

ein neues Handy · Ich suche einen günstigen Laptop. · mit meinem alten Fahrrad

After ein, kein and possessives (mein, dein …), the adjective ending shows the gender when the article doesn't. Learn the nominative and accusative first; in the dative, the ending is always -en.

How it works

  • Nominative: ein neuer Laptop, eine neue Tasche, ein neues Handy.
  • Accusative: only masculine changes: einen neuen Laptop.
  • Dative and all plurals (meine, keine): always -en.
der (m)die (f)das (n)Plural
Nom.ein alter Freundeine alte Stadtein altes Hausmeine alten Freunde
Akk.einen alten Freundeine alte Stadtein altes Hausmeine alten Freunde
Dat.einem alten Freundeiner alten Stadteinem alten Hausmeinen alten Freunden

Examples

  • Ich habe ein neues Handy. (I have a new phone.)
  • Ich suche einen günstigen Laptop. (I'm looking for a cheap laptop.)
  • Ravi fährt mit seinem alten Fahrrad zur Arbeit. (Ravi rides his old bike to work.)
  • Das ist keine gute Idee. (That's not a good idea.)

हिंदीein, kein, mein के बाद adjective की ending gender बताती है: ein neuer Laptop, ein neues Handy।

The ending depends on what comes before the adjective. After der, die and das the article already shows the gender, so the ending is mostly -e or -en. After ein the adjective has to show the gender itself in three places (-er, -es, -es). With no article at all, the adjective takes the ending that der or dem would have had.

Ending इस पर निर्भर करती है कि adjective से पहले क्या है। der, die, das के बाद article पहले ही gender बता देता है, इसलिए ending ज़्यादातर -e या -en होती है। ein के बाद तीन जगह adjective को ख़ुद gender दिखाना पड़ता है (-er, -es, -es)। Article न हो तो adjective वही ending लेता है जो der या dem की होती।

Common mistakes

Forgetting the ending: ✗ ein neu Handy ✓ ein neues Handy. Or using -e for a masculine accusative: ✗ Ich kaufe einen neue Laptop. ✓ einen neuen Laptop
