German Conjunction Wenn

About 3 minutes · examples, common mistakes, Hindi help and practice with answers

In short

wenn (if, when) sends the verb to the end. If the wenn clause comes first, the next verb follows straight after the comma.

Wenn ich Zeit habe, gehe ich ins Fitnessstudio. · Ruf mich an, wenn du Fragen hast.

wenn means "if" or "when" (every time). Like weil, it sends the conjugated verb to the end of its clause.

How it works

  • …, wenn ich Zeit habe.
  • If the wenn clause comes first, the next verb follows directly after the comma: Wenn ich Zeit habe, gehe ich schwimmen.
  • wenn is for conditions and for things that happen repeatedly: Wenn es regnet, nehme ich den Bus.
  • For one event in the past, German uses als, not wenn (that's a B1 topic).

Examples

  • Wenn ich Zeit habe, gehe ich ins Fitnessstudio. (When I have time, I go to the gym.)
  • Ruf mich an, wenn du Fragen hast. (Call me if you have questions.)
  • Wenn das Wetter schön ist, fahren wir an den See. (If the weather is nice, we'll go to the lake.)
  • Ich trinke Chai, wenn ich müde bin. (I drink chai when I'm tired.)

हिंदीwenn = अगर या जब। weil की तरह यहाँ भी verb आख़िर में जाता है।

Where the verb goes after weil, dass, wenn and deshalb

Verb position after deshalb and trotzdem compared with weil, dass, wenn and ob

Both groups join two ideas, but they treat the verb differently. After weil, dass, wenn and ob the conjugated verb moves to the end of its clause. After deshalb and trotzdem it stays in position 2, straight after the connecting word.

दोनों तरह के शब्द दो बातों को जोड़ते हैं, पर verb की जगह अलग होती है। weil, dass, wenn और ob के बाद verb उस हिस्से के बिल्कुल आख़िर में जाता है। deshalb और trotzdem के बाद verb तुरंत दूसरे नंबर पर आता है।

Common mistakes

Normal word order after the comma: ✗ Wenn ich Zeit habe, ich gehe schwimmen. ✓ Wenn ich Zeit habe, gehe ich schwimmen.

Practice
