Word Building: Nouns with -ung, Adjectives with un-

About 3 minutes · examples, common mistakes, Hindi help and practice with answers

In short

Verb + -ung makes a noun (always die). un- gives an adjective the opposite meaning.

wohnen → die Wohnung · bequem → unbequem

Two easy ways to build new words: -ung turns a verb into a noun (always die), and un- turns an adjective into its opposite.

How it works

  • Verb stem + -ung = feminine noun: wohnen → die Wohnung, bestellen → die Bestellung, erklären → die Erklärung.
  • Plural: -ungen: die Wohnungen.
  • un- + adjective = opposite: bequem → unbequem, freundlich → unfreundlich, möglich → unmöglich.

Examples

  • Die Wohnung ist hell und ruhig. (The flat is bright and quiet.)
  • Ich warte noch auf die Bestätigung. (I'm still waiting for the confirmation.)
  • Das Bett im Hotel war unbequem. (The bed in the hotel was uncomfortable.)
  • Es ist unmöglich, alles an einem Tag zu machen. (It's impossible to do everything in one day.)

हिंदीverb में -ung जोड़ने से noun बनता है (हमेशा die): wohnen → die Wohnung। un- से उल्टा अर्थ: bequem → unbequem।

Common mistakes

The wrong article for -ung nouns: ✗ der Wohnung ✓ die Wohnung. Every -ung noun is feminine.
