Word Building: -chen, -er, -in and Compound Nouns

About 3 minutes · examples, common mistakes, Hindi help and practice with answers

In short

-chen makes something small (always das), -er and -in name a person, and a compound noun takes the article of its last part.

das Brot → das Brötchen · lehren → der Lehrer, die Lehrerin · die Haustür

Three more ways German builds words: -chen makes things small, -er and -in name people, and two nouns join to make one.

How it works

  • -chen: small, always das, often with an umlaut: das Brot → das Brötchen, die Tasse → das Tässchen.
  • -er (man) / -in (woman): lehren → der Lehrer, die Lehrerin; spielen → der Spieler, die Spielerin.
  • Compound nouns: the last part decides the article: das Haus + die Tür = die Haustür; der Kaffee + die Tasse = die Kaffeetasse.
  • Sometimes a linking -s- or -n-: die Arbeitszeit, die Straßenbahn.

Examples

  • Zum Frühstück esse ich zwei Brötchen. (I eat two bread rolls for breakfast.)
  • Meine Tante ist Lehrerin in Lucknow. (My aunt is a teacher in Lucknow.)
  • Wo ist der Haustürschlüssel? (Where's the front-door key?)
  • Die Arbeitszeit ist von neun bis fünf. (Working hours are from nine to five.)

हिंदी-chen से चीज़ छोटी हो जाती है (das Brötchen), -er/-in से व्यक्ति (der Lehrer, die Lehrerin), दो noun जोड़कर नया शब्द (die Haustür)।

Common mistakes

Taking the article from the first part: ✗ das Haustür ✓ die Haustür (because die Tür).

Practice

Make one word and give the article.

  1. das Kind + der Garten
  2. der Geburtstag + die Party
