Indirect Questions with Question Words
About 3 minutes · examples, common mistakes, Hindi help and practice with answers
In short
A polite opener, then the question word, with the verb at the end.
Können Sie mir sagen, wo die Post ist? · Wissen Sie, wann der Kurs anfängt?
Indirect questions are polite: "Can you tell me where …?" The question word stays, but the conjugated verb moves to the end.
How it works
- Intro + comma + question word + … + verb: Können Sie mir sagen, wo die Post ist?
- Useful intros: Können Sie mir sagen, … / Wissen Sie, … / Ich weiß nicht, … / Ich möchte wissen, …
- Separable verbs join up at the end: …, wann der Kurs anfängt?
Examples
- Können Sie mir sagen, wo die Post ist? (Can you tell me where the post office is?)
- Wissen Sie, wann der Kurs anfängt? (Do you know when the course starts?)
- Ich weiß nicht, wie viel das kostet. (I don't know how much that costs.)
- Darf ich fragen, woher Sie kommen? (May I ask where you're from?)
हिंदीविनम्र सवाल: Können Sie mir sagen, wo … ist? सवाल वाला शब्द वहीं रहता है, verb आख़िर में जाता है।
