Indirect Yes/No Questions with ob
About 3 minutes · examples, common mistakes, Hindi help and practice with answers
In short
For a yes/no question, use ob (whether), with the verb at the end.
Ich weiß nicht, ob er heute kommt. · Darf ich fragen, ob ich bar zahlen kann?
Yes/no questions have no question word. In an indirect question, use ob (whether, if), and the verb goes to the end.
How it works
- Kommt er heute? → Ich weiß nicht, ob er heute kommt.
- Kann ich bar zahlen? → Darf ich fragen, ob ich bar zahlen kann?
- ob = whether. wenn = if/when (a condition). Don't mix them up.
Examples
- Ich weiß nicht, ob er heute kommt. (I don't know whether he's coming today.)
- Darf ich fragen, ob ich bar zahlen kann? (May I ask whether I can pay in cash?)
- Weißt du, ob die Apotheke am Sonntag offen ist? (Do you know whether the pharmacy is open on Sunday?)
हिंदीहाँ/ना वाले सवाल को indirect बनाने के लिए ob (कि क्या) लगाते हैं: Ich weiß nicht, ob …

Starting with Können Sie mir sagen or Wissen Sie makes a question polite. The question word stays, and the verb moves to the end. For yes/no questions, add ob.
Können Sie mir sagen … या Wissen Sie … से शुरू करने पर सवाल विनम्र हो जाता है। सवाल वाला शब्द (wo, wann) वहीं रहता है और verb आख़िर में चला जाता है। हाँ/ना वाले सवालों में ob (कि क्या) लगाते हैं।
Common mistakes
Using wenn instead of ob: ✗ Ich weiß nicht, wenn er kommt. ✓ Ich weiß nicht, ob er kommt.
