About 3 minutes · examples, common mistakes, Hindi help and practice with answers

In short

von … an marks a starting point. über with a number means more than.

Von Montag an arbeite ich im Homeoffice. · Die Fahrt dauert über drei Stunden.

Two useful time expressions: von … an (from … on) for a starting point, and über (over, more than) for a length of time.

How it works

  • von + Dat. + an: from then on. Von Montag an arbeite ich im Homeoffice.
  • Also: ab + Dat.: Ab Montag arbeite ich im Homeoffice.
  • über + amount of time: more than. Die Fahrt dauert über drei Stunden.

Examples

  • Von Montag an arbeite ich im Homeoffice. (From Monday on I'm working from home.)
  • Die Fahrt dauert über drei Stunden. (The journey takes over three hours.)
  • Ab nächster Woche habe ich Urlaub. (From next week I'm on holiday.)
  • Wir warten schon über eine Stunde. (We've been waiting for over an hour.)

हिंदीvon … an = … से शुरू करके। über = से ज़्यादा: über drei Stunden = तीन घंटे से ज़्यादा।
