an, auf, in with Places: Wo? and Wohin?

Which preposition goes with which place? It depends on the place. And because they are two-way prepositions: Wo? takes the dative, Wohin? the accusative.
How it works
- an: water and edges: am Meer, am See, am Strand (Wohin? ans Meer).
- auf: open places and events: auf dem Markt, auf der Party, auf dem Land.
- in: closed spaces, mountains, countries with an article: im Kino, in den Bergen, in der Schweiz.
- Cities and most countries: Wo? in Berlin. Wohin? nach Berlin.

Picture where you are. At the edge of water it's an, on an island or out in the countryside it's auf, and in the mountains or inside an area it's in. Use the Dativ for Wo? and the Akkusativ for Wohin?. Cities and most countries take in and nach.
