About 3 minutes · examples, common mistakes, Hindi help and practice with answers
In short
von (from) always takes the dative.
Die Uhr ist von meinem Vater. · Das habe ich von ihr bekommen.
von is always followed by the dative. It says where something comes from (a person or a starting point), and in speech it often replaces the genitive.
How it works
- von + dative: von dem → vom, von der, von den + -n.
- From a person: Das Geschenk ist von meiner Tante.
- Starting point: von Montag bis Freitag, von hier bis zum Bahnhof.
- Possession (spoken): das Auto von meinem Bruder.
Examples
- Die Uhr ist von meinem Vater. (The watch is from my father.)
- Das habe ich von ihr bekommen. (I got that from her.)
- Ich arbeite von Montag bis Freitag. (I work from Monday to Friday.)

हिंदीvon = से। von के बाद हमेशा Dativ: von meinem Vater = मेरे पिता से।
