German Connectors for B1: weil, obwohl, deshalb and More

In short

German connectors fall into three groups by what they do to the verb. After und, aber, denn, oder and sondern the word order stays normal. After weil, dass, obwohl and wenn the verb goes to the end. After deshalb, trotzdem and dann the verb comes straight away. Learn the group, not just the meaning.

Group 1: the word order stays normal

If the sentence starts with the subordinate clause, the main clause starts with its verb: Wenn ich Zeit habe, rufe ich dich an.

wenn or als?

For the past, use als for something that happened once or for one period of your life: Als ich 20 war, … Use wenn for something that happened every time: Immer wenn ich meine Oma besuchte, … In the present and future, it is always wenn.

um … zu and damit

Both give a purpose. If the person is the same in both parts, use um … zu with the infinitive: Ich lerne Deutsch, um in Deutschland zu arbeiten. If the person changes, you need damit: Ich spreche langsam, damit du mich verstehst.

Frequently asked questions

Both mean because. After weil the verb goes to the end: weil ich krank bin. After denn the word order stays normal: denn ich bin krank.

Obwohl starts a subordinate clause with the verb at the end: obwohl es regnet. Trotzdem stands in the main clause and the verb follows it directly: Trotzdem gehen wir spazieren.

Als is for a single event or period in the past: Als ich Kind war. Wenn is for repeated events in the past and for everything in the present and future: Wenn ich Zeit habe.

Use um … zu when both parts of the sentence have the same subject. Use damit when the subject changes: Ich erkläre es noch einmal, damit alle es verstehen.
