A formal letter on paper
In the telc exam you write an email. In real life in Germany you will also send letters on paper, to an office, a landlord or an insurance company. This is the usual layout.
| Where | What | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Top left | Your name and address | Ram Kumar, Gartenstraße 12, 50667 Köln |
| Below, left | The recipient's address | Stadtwerke Köln, Kundenservice, Postfach 10 11 22, 50451 Köln |
| Right | Place and date | Köln, 3. Oktober 2026 |
| Left, in bold | The subject, without the word Betreff | Kündigung meines Stromvertrags, Kundennummer 123456 |
| Left | Greeting | Sehr geehrte Damen und Herren, |
| Left | Text in paragraphs, a blank line between them, no indent | hiermit kündige ich meinen Vertrag zum 31. Dezember 2026. |
| Left | Goodbye, signature, printed name | Mit freundlichen Grüßen / (signature) / Ram Kumar |
| Left, at the end | Attachments, if any | Anlage: Kopie des Mietvertrags |
In an email you leave out the addresses and the date; the subject goes in the subject line.
Frequently asked questions
Redemittel are fixed phrases for typical situations, such as greeting, thanking, asking, apologising or giving an opinion. Learning them by heart saves time in the exam and reduces grammar mistakes.
Use du for friends, family and classmates. Use Sie for everyone else: landlords, teachers, offices, companies. If the email you answer uses Sie, answer with Sie.
With Sehr geehrte Frau plus surname, or Sehr geehrter Herr plus surname. If you do not know the name, write Sehr geehrte Damen und Herren. Then a comma, and the next line starts with a small letter.
With a closing sentence such as Ich freue mich auf Ihre Antwort, then Mit freundlichen Grüßen on its own line, then your full name. There is no comma after Mit freundlichen Grüßen.
