German Prepositions for B1: Cases, Time and Place

In short

Every German preposition decides the case of the noun after it. Some always take the accusative (für, ohne), some always the dative (mit, bei, seit), nine take either depending on movement or position, and a few take the genitive (wegen, trotz, während). At B1 you also need the time prepositions.

Two-way prepositions (Wechselpräpositionen)

Nine prepositions take the accusative when something moves to a place (Wohin?) and the dative when something is at a place (Wo?).

PrepositionWohin? (accusative)Wo? (dative)
anIch hänge das Bild an die Wand.Das Bild hängt an der Wand.

unterDie Katze läuft unter das Bett.Die Katze liegt unter dem Bett.
vorIch stelle das Auto vor die Garage.Das Auto steht vor der Garage.
zwischenStell den Stuhl zwischen die Tische.Der Stuhl steht zwischen den Tischen.

Verbs of putting take the accusative: stellen, legen, setzen, hängen. Verbs of being there take the dative: stehen, liegen, sitzen, hängen.

Movement is not enough

The accusative needs a change of place, not just movement. Ravi joggt im Park: he moves, but stays inside the park, so it is Wo? and dative. Ravi joggt in den Park: he runs from outside into it, so Wohin? and accusative. In the same way, Das Flugzeug kreist über der Stadt (above it, dative) but fliegt über die Stadt (across it, accusative).

Contractions: im, ins, zum, zur

Some prepositions merge with dem, das or der. The first group is standard in speech and writing. The second group is spoken and informal: fine in a conversation, but write the full form in a formal email.

Short formFull formCaseExample

ansan dasaccusativeIch gehe ans Fenster.

Do not contract when the article is stressed or a relative clause follows: Das ist das Haus, in dem ich geboren bin. vorm is vor dem; there is no form vorms.

Where to? nach, zu or in

Three prepositions all translate as to. Which one you need depends on the place.

PlacePrepositionExample
Cities, countries and continents without an articlenachIch fliege nach Indien. / nach Berlin.
Homenach Hause (going there) / zu Hause (being there)Ich gehe nach Hause. Ich bin zu Hause.

Frequently asked questions

Aus, bei, mit, nach, seit, von and zu always take the dative. So do gegenüber, außer and ab. The nine two-way prepositions take the dative when they answer the question Wo?

At B1 you need wegen, trotz, während and statt, and also innerhalb and außerhalb. Example: Trotz des Regens gehen wir spazieren.

Seit describes something that started in the past and is still going on: Ich lerne seit einem Jahr Deutsch. Vor names a point in the past: Vor einem Jahr habe ich angefangen.

Ask Wohin? or Wo? A change of place takes the accusative: Ich gehe ins Kino. A position, or movement inside one place, takes the dative: Ich bin im Kino. Ich jogge im Park.

In most sentences, yes: im Büro, ins Kino and zum Arzt sound natural, in dem Büro does not. Use the full form only when the article is stressed or a relative clause follows: das Haus, in dem ich wohne.

Nach for cities, countries without an article and nach Hause. Zu for people and places you go to (zum Arzt, zum Bahnhof). In with the accusative for countries with an article and places you go into (in die Schweiz, ins Kino).
