How the oral exam runs

Before the exam you prepare alone for 20 minutes. You get a task sheet for each part and may make notes. You may use your notes in the exam, but reading them aloud is not allowed. Then you and your partner talk to each other in front of two examiners. The examiners mostly listen. Asking your partner questions and helping your partner when they are stuck is rated positively.

Sprechen Teil 1: Kontaktaufnahme (15 points)

Both candidates have the same sheet with a few cues, such as name, where you come from, how you live, family, work, languages and hobbies. You talk about yourself and ask your partner questions, like a first conversation with a new colleague. The examiners may add one more topic that is not on the sheet.

Sample: Teil 1

A: Guten Tag, ich heiße Ram Kumar. Und wie heißen Sie? B: Ich bin Geeta Sharma. Woher kommen Sie, Herr Kumar? Was machen Sie beruflich? A: Ich arbeite als Krankenpfleger. Was machen Sie in Ihrer Freizeit?

Short answers, then a question back. That keeps the conversation moving.

Sprechen Teil 2: Gespräch über ein Thema (30 points)

You and your partner have different sheets on the same topic, for example two people giving their opinion about working from home. First each of you says what your sheet is about. Then you discuss the topic: you tell your own experiences and give your opinion.

  • Report: say who the person on your sheet is and what they think. Use your own words.
  • Experience: tell one short example from your life or your country.
  • Opinion: say what you think and give a reason with weil.
  • Ask: Wie ist das bei Ihnen? or Was meinen Sie dazu?
Sample: Teil 2 (topic: working from home)

A: Da haben Sie recht. Eine Mischung ist wahrscheinlich am besten.

Sprechen Teil 3: Gemeinsam eine Aufgabe lösen (30 points)

Both of you have the same sheet. You plan something together, for example a farewell party for a colleague or a day trip with the course. You suggest ideas, react to your partner's ideas and agree on who does what. The cues on the sheet (when, where, food, who invites, costs) can help.

Sample: Teil 3 (planning a farewell party)

A: Gute Idee. A: Einverstanden. Ich reserviere einen Tisch. Können Sie ein Geschenk besorgen? B: Ja, das mache ich. Wie viel Geld sammeln wir pro Person? A: Vielleicht fünf Euro?

The last line sums up the plan. Examiners like to hear a clear result.

Tips from our classes

  • Talk to your partner, not to the examiners.
  • In the preparation time, write key words, not sentences. You cannot read aloud.
  • Learn ten phrases by heart: suggesting, agreeing, disagreeing, asking back.
  • If you do not understand, say so: Entschuldigung, können Sie das bitte wiederholen? That is normal conversation and costs nothing.
  • If your partner is silent, help with a question. If your partner talks too much, say: Darf ich dazu auch etwas sagen?
